"As far back as I can remember my mom, Anthe Kritikos (left of photo in red surrounded by her colleagues) has been a role model for me
She came to Canada from Greece at the young age of 17-still a teenager! She immediately immersed herself in a new world. A new language, her first job, a new people. Times were tough but her spirit was brave.
She assimilated to everything new quickly. Her resilience, strength and hardworking nature never let up. Did you ever think of going back I’ve asked her? No she’s said. There was no looking back. This was her new life. She was determined to make the best of it.
Ever since then she has worked day in day out to make a good life for our family. She is now retired but her 50 year plus career in the garment industry has been remarkable. A creative outgoing spirit loved by anyone in her presence.
When I reflect on International Women’s Day today I think of not only her but all the strong women who stand beside her.
Whether they are homemakers, teachers, entrepreneurs, engineers, or artists, women have been making the world a better place with their infinite strength, determination and belief.
With power enough to shatter the shackles of patriarchy, women are rising above societal hurdles every single day, making them a stronger force to reckon with in modern time.
This year, the goal is to create a gender-equal world. It is about celebrating women’s success and raising awareness against bias. So, we should all choose to ‘challenge’ to bring the change.
